We recently have been going through Jamie Oliver’s Meals in Minutes book. The latest recipe that we made was his Rib-Eye Stir-Fry with Dan Dan Noodles and Chilled Hibiscus Tea. Click the link to get the full recipe. The meal itself turned out really tasty. The steak we used was originally a little thick and we ended up cutting it in half after cooking each side for a bit. It worked out fine but we should have bought thinner steak or cut it before hand. We also substituted the chow mein noodles for a thinner Chinese egg noodle. I like the thinner noodle better so use whatever noodle you like the best.

Now for the Hibiscus Tea. This didn’t really turn out like it should have. I waited too late in the process to make the tea and it ended up being hot instead of cold. It wasn’t really great warm, but as it cooled down throughout the meal it started to taste a little better. I also made it in a thermal carafe so that didn’t really help in cooling it down quickly. Next time we make this I would make the tea right away and let it steep in a cold drink pitcher. We also substituted Hibiscus tea with Mint tea because we couldn’t find any at the store. Not sure if this made any better or worse, but I would like to try the Hibiscus tea next time.

Overall this was fairly easy meal to make, but it did feel a little overwhelming at times because there was so much going on in different places. This is definitely one of those recipes that the more you do it and the less reading you do the easier it will be.

When living by yourself it can be very hard to find motivation to cook meals for yourself. There is usually a lot of take out or easy pre-made dinners. Not only is this not good for you, but if you love to cook you don’t end up doing it as much as you would like. This has been the case for myself and my girlfriend, Abla, for many years now. We both live alone and love to cook but don’t do it nearly enough. Since we have been together, almost a year now, we have slowly been cooking more for each other and rediscovering our love for it. We are soon moving in together and this year we made a new years resolution to cook more and try new things that we haven’t tried to make before. We decided we should document our process, if only just for ourselves. Here are some of the things we plan to try and get better at making this year.

Making our own pasta – we recently came into a pasta maker.

Ice Cream

Bread

Hot sauce

Pizza and the dough

Ribs – I can’t believe I have never made ribs.

Eggs Benedict with our own Hollandaise sauce.

We’ll see how well we do with this list throughout the year. As we try different recipes we will post our experience and highlight any tips for the next time we make it. We also really like to go out and eat, so we may write about good food we have had at restaurants. We are looking forward to this year and our adventure in food.
